Harlands Primary School

Harlands PTA

(Charity Registration No 800232)

Every few years the PTA line up changes.  Here is our current approach.

A committee of four elected trustees - all parents at the school - steer the charity in line with its constitution.  The committee includes Hayley Cook (Treasurer), Kitty Fairbairn (Vice Chair and Comms Officer), Yas Shepherd (Secretary) and Kim Staines-Rebeiro (Chair).  We are responsible for the governance of the charity, and our priorities include:

  • Engagement:  building interest in PTA activities to encourage volunteer involvement
  • Fundraising: so we can donate to Harlands and enhance the school environment for all through improved facilities and experiences for pupils
  • Community:  bringing people together around the school

L-R: Kim Staines-Rebeiro (Beech parent), Yas Shepherd (Rowan & Chestnut parent), Kitty Fairbairn (Oak parent) and Hayley Cook (Cherry & Rowan parent)

How we work

The Committee meet regularly as a group and with the school to stay on top of PTA governance and planning. We also hold open committee meetings at the start and end of each term via zoom - all members are welcome to attend (this likely includes you - more on membership below). Our sign up sheet is regularly circulated in school newsletters.

PTA fundraising and community building is reliant on larger one-off events (e.g. school discos, a winter or summer fair) and regular activities (e.g. cake sales, lottery, uniform sales) and socials.

Each one-off event requires a small group (‘sub-committee’) of volunteer Event Coordinators to ensure its delivery, which always includes at least one PTA trustee. In 2023, we thanked the Winter Wonderland sub-committee for their incredible efforts. For 2024, we are currently working with sub-committees on a Disco, Pancake Races, Easter trail, and Quiz Night. To help celebrate Harlands’ 60th birthday this year, we are actively recruiting for volunteers to join a Summer Circus sub-committee. This will likely be our largest initiative of the year, taking place on 29 June.

Throughout the year we have fantastic support from Activity Coordinators (running the lottery, raffles, and pre-loved uniform sales), Class Reps (coordinating cake sales and other in-class PTA activities), and Helpers (who respond to occasional requests via a Whatsapp group). Thank you all.

But we always need more support! If you’re reading this, you are likely a member of the PTA, even if you don’t yet know it. PTA membership includes all parents, guardians or carers of any pupil currently attending the school, plus all staff (teaching and non-teaching) currently employed by the school. So, your views and ideas count, and we’d love to hear from you.

If you have suggestions or interest in being involved in any of our activities, please get in touch us via harlandspta@gmail.com, or come to an open meeting.
